Bexar County Jail

Visitor Policy

Interview with John, Raquel, Colby, Nikki, Lea and Hoyllwood

JM: How often could you receive visitors?
John: Twice a week for 20 min.
Raquel: Once a week most of the time.
Colby: Varies on your name as there are schedules based on the letter of the inmates last name. Apx 3 time a week and a day with children on the weekends, must be in the P.A.T.C.H. program for children visitation
Nikki: twice a week
Lea: 2 times a week for 20 minutes
Hoyllwood: I never got a visitor even if they did offer it to me.

JM: Was the check-in process lengthy for those who came to see you?
John: No, not really.
Raquel: Not really. Usually within 30 min to an hour.
Colby: Yes, as overcrowding remains to be a challenge for the jail, also brings more people to visit loved ones. Avereage wait is Apx 2 hours in early part of the day or 3-4 hours in the evening as more people are off from work and haves that oppurtunity to visit loved ones
Nikki: I don't know, but I heard it is
Lea: yes my visitor waited 2 hours
Hoyllwood: I dunno... no one woulda come to see me.

JM: What was the visiting environment like?
John: Dirty and small.
Raquel: Cold. Sterile. You talk through glass with a phone. Not the best experience I have ever had.
Colby: Crowded.
Nikki: I never had a visit except from a lawyer and it seemed typical for a jail, similar to what you might see on TV
Lea: glass window telephone to talk through

The phone line is always busy. There does not seem to be a functioning web site for the jail. They should have the actual visitor policy here so we know when we can visit. I have to get a sitter and go see my cousin. I can't get through on the phone and can't find an official website. How backward of Bexar County not to have one. Posting helpful information online would free up phone lines.

Noon to 7:30. If the inmate's last name starts with A-L, visitations are on Saturday

your website is almost useless. A simple statement of the visitor policy and visiting hours is needed. These conversations are unnecessary. Especially need visiting hours listed

I guess you don't understand the point of the whole website... if you want official jail policies you should just check the jail's website or call them. This is a place for people to ask questions and get answers from former inmates and friends of former inmates.

I suppose if we didn't do anything wrong we wouldn't be there and our loved ones wouldn't have to endure the nastiness and degrading conditions. I really marvel reading people that complain about jail. Truthfully when you are an inmate you don't have normal rights as law abiding citizens do as it should be.

You're ignorant... read Eric's comment - the inmate did the crime, not their innocent family members. The only chance of rehabilitating these people comes from normal interaction with friends and family on the outside - you should encourage (not discourage) people from visiting them.

We were not talking about howq gaurd treat inmates but how they treat us as visitors like inmates. And... to wait 3 hours to see an inmate in the nasty condition of the visiting area.

The visiting area is nasty! You have to wait 2 hours before you can see your loved one. The officers are rude and they make you feel like your an inmate! The restrooms are horrible, with crap and trash. It is not fair or right that the family/friends are treated in this manner!!

This Comment about visitation is spot on!!!!!Except I waited for three hours only to find out that only immediate family is allowed on the 1st visit. I am her common law husband of 6 years and i was denied. Guards hat their job and are miserable so they make everyone else feel the same... Or atleast they try to. -E
